We interrupt our regularly scheduled blogging to deplore the action today by the Parliament of Bangladesh to place Grameen Bank under government control. Such a politically motivated takeover is inexcusable. If the government’s control is consolidated and this new law is implemented, we can anticipate a variety of poor outcomes for the women who are clients of the bank. The best hope is that this law will be overturned by a new government after upcoming elections.

It’s a black day for Bangladesh and possibly this will be the last nail in Hasina’s coffin.
