Paul, aren't you just too uncharacteristically stoical in your last paragraph? It is a nice pacific middle ground! I suppose the debate was a kind of comic relief to this serious field of financial inclusion. I am sure Beth is a leader and advocate for financial services to the poor( and not just a formal financial services leader). We all know for a fact that financial inclusion covers both formal and informal financial services. If it were not the case, we would be courting financial inclusion protestanism. The good thing with a debate is that it is just that-a debate. And it comes with fun.

You are right. Many women have both heels and flip flops in their closets. They don't clomp around with one of each, but they do find that each has its own time and place.

Thanks for that Beth.

I was there at Extreme Inclusion also, and I wanted to vote with one high heel and one flip flop, but we weren't offered that option. But it's a false debate: while it's uncomfortable to walk with mismatching shoes, lots of people (certainly including you and me) regularly use both formal and informal services.

There is not question that Big Banks will be around for the foreseeable future, misleading clients about their costs, acting like they are above the law, plotting with politicians at Davos, paying obscene bonuses -- and providing services that we need and that no one else can supply.

At the same time, the informal sector will be around also, providing social support for people to meet their personal financial and social goals, empowering, transparent, nearby and low cost - BUT, unable to provide the transfers, long-term savings, home mortgages, car insurance, larger loans and so on that some of us need.

There's no secret where my heart lies, but I know people want both formal and informal services, and I look forward to working with the formal folks and the informal folks to improve the quality of services for everyone!
