Great blog Rosita! Certainly a testament to how important it is for banks that offer child/youth savings accounts to create an environment that is child friendly. Your blog also reminds me of the interesting learnings we're gaining within the YouthSave Project, such as the important role parents/community members can play in nudging youth to save (as your mother did with you). The Global Assets Project has alluded to some of these important nudges in our recent policy brief, if it's of interest, "Accelerating Financial Capability among Youth: Nudging New Thinking." More info is available on youthsave.org. Looking forward to reading your next blog!

I love that the bank allowed you to open an account when you were that young--good for them for seeing a need and adjusting either their barriers to entry or their product to accomodate you.

I remember my first savings account: it was branded specifically for children, complete with a playful clown mascot. It came with a paper piggy bank that I could bring to the bank in lieu of a deposit slip, and I received monthly account updates in the mail from them. Now, 20 years later, I still have a deposit account with the same bank. I gained financial access, and the bank fostered customer loyalty. Their investment in me has certainly paid off for them over the long-term.

Rosita -- Great post, both from a personal perspective and in pulling together the various youth savings initiatives and explaining them all in one place.
Your piece reminded me of something Stuart Rutheford said last week at a workshop he was leading at the Microfinance Network. He said that the best source of financial education was learning by doing, and that is where youth savings has a unique ability to make a contribution.
